Microsoft’s Kinect technology

Concerns over the limitations of Microsoft’s Kinect technology haven’t exactly been quiet over the past couple of months. Developers have expressed a good amount worry over the fact that Kinect has trouble recognizing players who are sitting and lying down. However, Microsoft, in attempt to quell the outcry, have changed the algorithm used to identify players and their locations.

You see, it works something like this: the base node that Kinect uses to identify players and construct their avatar (thus tracking their movements) used to be set at the base of the spine. Now, Microsoft changed where the base node is, setting it at the base of the neck, making it easier to find players who aren’t standing directly in front of the Kinect sensor.
So, this is good news for both people who want to use Kinect but not go all the way with the “motion-sensor crap,” and developers who want integrate, say, sit-ups into their games. As for me? Well, I’ll still be using a controller.
